Tottenham is a residential area in North London, England. Located in the London Borough of Haringey, Tottenham lies less than 7 miles from central London. Tottenham developed around Ermine Street, a Roman Road stretching from the south of the country to the north. Despite the arrival of the railway in 1840, it was not until the mid-19th century that the settlement really began to develop. The area grew drastically in the 1850s and 60s, with its population more than doubling. Tottenham became a densely populated suburb, and its poorly built infrastructure and estates were addled with water supply and sewage problems. Despite this urban expansion, Tottenham remained bordered by marshes and farmland until the early 20th century. Factories and offices populated this land in the early 1900s, with many companies relocating from London. By this time, Tottenham was considered an urban district. Its shops, office blocks, music hall, skating rink and factories provided employment and entertainment for its numerous inhabitants, and by the 1930s no farmland was left in the area. Tottenham became a designated municipal borough in 1934, and in 1965 became part of the London Borough of Haringey.
